i can understand all of what he's saying, my English comprehension is good because i heard English since I was a kid, but can I speak fluently??? no. looks like just input wont help and u gotta practice speaking too

Professor Stephen krushen is a hero in his profession.

What Krashen is explaining here goes far beyond language acquisition. The correlation between motivation, self-esteem and negative effect of anxiety works the same way whatever you are exposed to learning or acquiring.

I saw a video of Stephen Krashen giving the same lecture except he didn't draw. It was way better. I can't find it anywhere

I think english center wont let thier learners know this method because its too dangerous. I mean. If all of them know the only to acquire a new language is approaching more and more of contents in english with visulisation, they will drop out try this. And then they will figure that is best with the best budget.

I totally agree, it's important to create safe environments in order to create Language Acquisition. Also, this video shows some perspectives that are very clear and accepted even at this moment, 2024. Comprehensible Input is the most important part of L2 Acquisition

Dear Professor Krashen! As a young ELT teacher, fresh out of Eötvös Lóránd University, Budapest, - (back in .. well, a long time ago) - where we had learnt about Fillmore, Chomsky and Your Language Acquisition Theory, I was so lucky as to become a co-author to an English Language Teaching book to be written with the brief: 'Krashen's Comprehensible Input and Natural Order Theory'. It was really the main author, Horlai György - with a knack for ingenious use of language - who created the text, while I was responsibe for grammar (drills, exercises etc.) But whatever we did, it had to be contextually comprehensible and always to use just N+1 (sorry, that's how we called it) element. Horlai's feat was to build the 'language' from beginner to intermediate level by creating a crime story running through 33 units. I feel like I finally reached the quintessence in language aquisision.

My question is: how did I learn foreign languages in two different situations. Getting input in English and German from the moment I could read in Dutch and the input was accompanied by subtitles (movies, series and so on). It was not comprehensible all those years and still I could write, speak the languages at secondary school and all the grammar and so on that was added just helped. Second: I had dinner every week with a Spanish native both of us being theatre teachers and we had no equal communication means other then gesturing. But I did know how to speak Spanish after six months. I just cannot fully understand this in line with what mister Krashen says here. His speech does mate sense to me as a teacher though and I would like to thank him so much for all that he's made clearer ❤!

This is interesting. My mom told me I didnt start speaking until 4 or 5 years old and when I did, I spoke in full sentences. For the forst years of my life, they thought I was mute and took me to doctors. Later they thought maybe I was just shy. Turns out, I was unknowingly doing language acquisition 😂

It is amazing that so many people in the world still disagree with Stephen Krashen's comprehensible input hypothesis. I heard someone, some "teacher", call it BS on a UA-cam channel. No one is so blind as he who refuses to see.

Such a brilliant talk , i saw someone challenging himself to leave a comment in every yt video to reduce anxiety and i think that's a good idea ( I'm an Arabic native speaker and my english level it's under average )

This video is underrated.

My boyfriend learned English in the traditional school way. After 8 or 9 years of learning, he still had to think and translate from our mother tongue (Greek). I, on the other hand, am very bad at memorizing things. I had a private tutor that was extremely patient and repeated the grammar rules over and over again, with examples, till they got into my head. I knew what tense to use, but I could not name it or explain why I chose it. I got my higher "you can study at university" degree in 5 years. One evening we are watching "Two and a half men" with Greek subtitles and the translator failed to realize that "I call shotgun" is an idiom and is not referring to actually using a gun. That was it! I was furious. We would watch the rest of the episodes with English subtitles. My bf was really struggling at first. He had many unknown words and didn't get any of the idioms. He was constantly saying "Huh?" and I paused the video to translate. By the end of the show he could write a 1000 word tutorial of his favorite game in English. Taking the anxiety out of the equation by watching a comedy and emerging into the culture and the everyday life of the people speaking that language taught him in one year more than any of his teachers managed to teach him in eight. Now I am learning Spanish with Duolingo. It's only been a month and I've just learned the present tense of regular verbs in the singular form, I am a beginner af but I was watching an American TV show the other day and when the actor said "Padre Felipe está enfermo" I understood what he said. And I was bursting with joy.
